Terms of Use

The agreement between you and Barcode.codes when you use the free tools on Barcode.codes.

Terms of Use

Last updated:

1. Agreement

These terms are an agreement between you and Barcode.codes ("we", "us"), the operator of Barcode.codes. By using the website you accept them. If you do not agree, please do not use the site. If you use Barcode.codes for an organisation, you accept these terms on its behalf.

2. The Service

Barcode.codes provides free online tools to create and read barcodes and QR codes, and information about barcode standards. The tools run in your web browser. No account is needed and no payment is taken.

3. Using the Barcodes You Create

You own the content you enter and the barcode images you create. We claim no rights in them, add no watermark and set no limit on how many you make. You may use them for personal and commercial purposes, including on products, packaging, labels, documents and websites.

You are responsible for the content you encode and for having the right to use it, including any trademarks, URLs or personal data it contains.

4. Barcode Numbers and GS1

The tools draw barcodes; they do not issue, register or license numbers. Product identifiers such as UPC, EAN, GTIN, SSCC and GLN that are used in retail and supply chains must be obtained from GS1 or as your retailer requires. A barcode made here with a number you are not entitled to use may be rejected by retailers or marketplaces, and that is your responsibility.

5. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • use the tools to make barcodes or QR codes for fraud, counterfeit goods, phishing, malware, or anything else that is unlawful or harms others;
  • copy another party's identifiers to pass products off as theirs;
  • interfere with the site, for example by overloading it, probing it for vulnerabilities without permission, or bypassing rate limits and security checks;
  • use automated means to send messages through the contact form;
  • present Barcode.codes as endorsing your products or services.

6. Test Before You Print

Whether a barcode can be read depends on its size, print resolution, contrast, quiet zones, label material and the scanners that read it. Settings such as DPI, X-dimension and bar width reduction help, but they do not guarantee a result. Always scan a test print with the scanners your labels will meet, and check that the decoded data is correct, before printing in quantity.

7. Barcode API

The barcode API at /render/ draws barcode images from a URL, as SVG, PNG, WebP, JPEG, PDF or EPS files. It is free and needs no key. Each IP address may have 120 new images drawn per minute; images answered from the cache do not count, and requests over the limit are refused until the minute is over. The data and the file size are limited, as the documentation describes.

The API is provided as is, without warranty and without any promise of availability or uptime. Its limits, types and parameters may change; the documentation at /barcode-api is the reference for how it works today.

8. Intellectual Property

The website, its design, text and code (apart from the content you create) belong to Barcode.codes or its licensors. Some parts are open-source software used under their own licences, such as bwip-js for barcode rendering.

QR Code is a registered trademark of DENSO WAVE INCORPORATED. GS1, GTIN and related names are trademarks of GS1. Other names may be trademarks of their owners. Barcode.codes is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them.

9. Third-Party Links and Services

The site may link to other websites and standards bodies. We do not control them and are not responsible for their content or practices.

10. Availability and Changes

We aim to keep Barcode.codes available and working, but we may change, add or remove tools and features, and the site may be unavailable at times. Because the service is free, we may suspend or end it at any time.

11. Disclaimer of Warranties

Barcode.codes and its tools are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement, to the extent the law allows. We do not warrant that every barcode will scan in every situation or that the site will be free of errors.

12. Limitation of Liability

To the extent the law allows, Barcode.codes is not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential losses, or for lost profits, data, goodwill or the cost of reprinting labels or packaging, that arise from using or being unable to use the site, even if we were told such losses were possible.

Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as liability for intent or gross negligence, or your rights as a consumer under the mandatory law of the country where you live.

13. Feedback

If you send us ideas or suggestions, we may use them to improve Barcode.codes without any obligation to you.

14. Privacy

How we handle personal data is described in the privacy policy, which is part of these terms.
