SSCC Barcode Generator

Make an SSCC barcode for a pallet or carton online for free. Enter the extension digit, your GS1 Company Prefix and a serial reference, and the generator adds the check digit and encodes the 18-digit SSCC as AI (00) in GS1-128, checked with GS1's syntax engine. Download SVG, PNG, PDF or EPS.

SSCC from your company prefix

Enter your 4- to 12-digit company prefix and a serial reference; the check digit is calculated.

Application Identifiers

  1. SSCC: Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC). Format N18; predefined length, no FNC1 needed.

Moving AIs with a predefined length, such as (01) and (17), to the front saves FNC1 separators.

Write the group separator as {GS}. Valid data replaces the AI rows.

The element strings in bracket notation. The brackets are not encoded; the generator adds FNC1 where GS1 requires it: 22 characters.

The margin is blank space outside the quiet zone, for cutting; the border is drawn at the outer edge. Both count in the print size.

How to Make an SSCC Barcode

Build the SSCC from your company prefix, put it in AI (00), and download the GS1-128 barcode.

      1. Choose an extension digit from 0 to 9.
      2. Enter your GS1 Company Prefix and a serial reference you have not used for another unit.
      3. Check the SSCC and its check digit, then choose Put the SSCC in AI (00).
      4. Add other AIs if your label needs them, then download the barcode and scan a test print.

      SSCC Number Structure

An SSCC has 18 digits: an extension digit, a GS1 Company Prefix, a serial reference and a check digit.

      The Four Parts

      • Extension digit: 0 to 9, assigned by the company that builds the SSCC to increase the capacity of the serial reference.
      • GS1 Company Prefix: 4 to 12 digits from a GS1 Member Organization; it makes the SSCC unique but does not show where the unit comes from.
      • Serial reference: the remaining digits up to the 17th, chosen by the prefix owner to identify each logistic unit.
      • Check digit: the 18th digit, calculated from the first 17.

      SSCC Example

The SSCC 106141411234567897 has extension digit 1, the example company prefix 0614141 used in GS1's General Specifications, serial reference 123456789 and check digit 7. As an element string it is written (00)106141411234567897.

GS1-128 barcode with the SSCC (00) 106141411234567897: extension digit 1, company prefix 0614141, serial reference 123456789 and check digit 7.
      SSCC 106141411234567897 in a GS1-128 barcode, AI (00).

      SSCC Check Digit Calculator

The SSCC check digit is the GS1 mod 10 digit: weights of 3 and 1 alternate from the right, and the digit brings the sum up to a multiple of 10.

      How the Helper Uses It

The SSCC helper calculates the check digit as you type, and the syntax check rejects an SSCC whose last digit is wrong. GS1 states that the check digit must be verified by application software.

SSCC Labels on Pallets and Cartons

The SSCC identifies one logistic unit, such as a pallet or a carton, and goes on its label as AI (00) in a GS1-128 barcode.

One SSCC for Each Logistic Unit

The serial reference is chosen to identify each logistic unit uniquely. Keep a record of the numbers you have used, because this generator does not store or track them.

      Contents and Count

A label can add the GTIN of the contents with (02) and their count with (37). GS1's syntax dictionary only allows (02) with (37), and (37) with (00) and either (02) or (8026); the check reports these rules.

      AIs Used With the SSCC

These logistics and shipping AIs can share a barcode with the SSCC when their pairing rules allow it.

Format: N is a digit; X, Y and Z are characters from GS1's character sets 82, 39 and 64; ".." means up to that many; brackets mark an optional part.

      Frequently Asked Questions

      What Is an SSCC?

SSCC stands for Serial Shipping Container Code, the GS1 key for a logistic unit such as a pallet or a parcel. It has 18 digits and is encoded with AI (00).

Where Do I Get a GS1 Company Prefix?

From a GS1 Member Organization, such as GS1 US in the United States. Barcode.codes does not issue prefixes or SSCCs, and a number that passes the check is not a registration.

What Is the Extension Digit For?

It adds a digit of capacity to the serial reference. The company that builds the SSCC assigns it, from 0 to 9.

      What Does SSCC-18 Mean?

People write SSCC-18 because the SSCC has 18 digits; GS1 simply calls it the SSCC. The generator encodes exactly 18 digits in AI (00).

Can the Generator Number Many Pallets in a Row?

No. It makes one SSCC at a time and does not remember serial references, so track your numbers in your own system.

Can I Put an SSCC in GS1 DataMatrix?

This page draws GS1-128. The GS1 DataMatrix generator accepts the same (00) element string if your trading partner asks for a 2D code.
