Interleaved 2 of 5 Barcode Generator
Make an Interleaved 2 of 5 (ITF) barcode online for free. Enter any number: the digits are encoded in pairs, a leading zero is added when the count is odd, and you can add a modulo 10 check digit. Set the size for your printer and download SVG, PNG, PDF or EPS.

How to Create an Interleaved 2 of 5 Barcode
Type the digits, decide on the check digit, and download the file.
- Type the number; Interleaved 2 of 5 takes digits only.
- Tick Add a check character if the reading system expects a modulo 10 check digit.
- Read the note under the options: it says when a leading 0 is added to make the count even.
- Download SVG, PNG, PDF or EPS and test-scan a print.
How Interleaved 2 of 5 Encodes Digits
Interleaved 2 of 5 encodes digits in pairs: the first digit of each pair in five bars and the second in the five spaces between them.
Two of Five Elements Are Wide
- Per digit: five elements, two wide and three narrow.
- Per pair: one digit in the bars and the next in the spaces, interleaved.
- Ratio: wide elements three times the narrow ones in this generator.

An Even Number of Digits
Odd counts: get a leading 0, which the scanner returns as part of the number.

With a check digit: the count includes it, so 7 digits plus a check digit need no padding.

Interleaved 2 of 5 Specifications
These are the rules of Interleaved 2 of 5 as described in the encoder's reference, which cites ISO/IEC 16390.
| Property | Interleaved 2 of 5 |
|---|---|
| Digits | Variable length, an even number of digits; a leading 0 is added to an odd count |
| Characters | Digits 0 to 9, two per symbol character: one in five bars and the next in five spaces, two of each five wide |
| Check digit | Optional modulo 10 check digit |
| Symbology type | Continuous, with self-checking characters, readable in both directions |
| Width | Each pair of digits takes 4N + 6 modules for a wide-to-narrow ratio N, so 18 modules at 3:1, plus N + 6 modules for the start and stop patterns |
| Short scans | Start and stop patterns can occur inside the data, so readers should accept one fixed length, and a check digit catches partial reads |
| Wide-to-narrow ratio | Drawn at 3:1 by this tool |
| Standards | ISO/IEC 16390, ANSI/AIM BC2 (USS Interleaved 2 of 5) and BS EN 801 |
| Where the numbers come from | Your own data; cartons with a GTIN use the fixed-length ITF-14 |
| Example | 12345678 |
BWIPP Interleaved 2 of 5 reference (digits, leading zero, modulo 10 check digit, standards); GS1 General Specifications §5.3.1 (ITF symbology characteristics), §5.3.2.2 (width formula) and §5.3.3 (short scans).

Short Scans and Fixed Lengths
The start and stop patterns of Interleaved 2 of 5 can also appear inside the data, so a scanner beam that crosses only part of the code can return a shorter valid number.
Set Your Scanner to a Fixed Length
GS1 handles this for ITF-14 by always using 14 digits and programming readers to accept only that length. Do the same for your own Interleaved 2 of 5 numbers: keep one length and set the scanner to it.
Use the Check Digit
A check digit lets the reading system reject a number that was only partly read. Add it unless your system cannot accept it.
Interleaved 2 of 5 and ITF-14
ITF-14 is Interleaved 2 of 5 with exactly 14 digits, a GS1 check digit and bearer bars, used for GTINs on cartons.
Which One to Use
Use ITF-14 when the barcode carries a GTIN for a carton or case. Use plain Interleaved 2 of 5 for your own numbers, such as internal stock or document numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why Was a 0 Added to My Number?
Interleaved 2 of 5 encodes digits in pairs, so the count must be even. A leading 0 makes it even and is returned by the scanner as part of the number.
Can Interleaved 2 of 5 Encode Letters?
No, digits only. Use Code 128 for letters and symbols.
What Is the Maximum Length?
The generator encodes as many digits as you type, but long numbers make wide barcodes. Keep one length for all your labels so scanners can check it.
Is ITF the Same as Interleaved 2 of 5?
Yes, ITF is the short name for Interleaved 2 of 5. ITF-14 is the 14-digit GS1 version used on cartons.
How Is the Check Digit Calculated?
With modulo 10, using weights 3 and 1 from the right, the same rule as GS1 check digits. The generator adds it when you tick Add a check character.
Is This Generator Free?
Yes. There is no account and no limit, and the barcodes may be used commercially.
