ISBN Lookup and ISBN Converter

Look up an ISBN for free: type an ISBN-10 or ISBN-13, and the lookup checks its check digit, shows the other form and the registration group, then searches Open Library for the book when you click. You can also download the ISBN as an EAN-13 barcode in six formats.

Sum 93; the check digit brings it up to the next multiple of ten: 100 − 93 = 7. The last digit is 7, so it is valid.

Notes

  • Registration group 978-0: English language. The group names the ISBN agency, not where the book was printed.

Open registries

A search sends only this number from your browser to the registry you choose (Open Library, openlibrary.org), which has its own privacy policy. Nothing is sent before you click, and Barcode.codes does not see the answer.

How to Use the ISBN Lookup

Type the ISBN, read the check and the other form, then search Open Library for the book if you need its title.

  1. Type or paste the ISBN from the copyright page or under the barcode; hyphens and spaces are ignored, and an ISBN-10 may end in X.
  2. Read the result: a wrong check digit is named with the digit it should be, and a valid ISBN shows its ISBN-13 and ISBN-10 forms.
  3. Click Search Open Library to look for the book; the search runs from your browser only when you click.
  4. Download the ISBN barcode as SVG, PNG, WebP, JPEG, PDF or EPS if you need it for a cover.

ISBN Formats This Lookup Reads

The lookup reads both ISBN forms and the barcode digits, with or without hyphens.

ISBN-13

  • 978 or 979 first: the two prefixes GS1 gave to the ISBN system.
  • 13 digits: the last is a GS1 check digit, the same as an EAN-13.
  • With hyphens: the lookup adds them by the International ISBN Agency's published ranges.

ISBN-10

  • 10 characters: the older form of a 978 ISBN.
  • X at the end: the check character can be X, which stands for 10.

ISBN-10 to ISBN-13 Converter

Every valid ISBN-10 has an ISBN-13 that starts with 978 and gets a new check digit, and the lookup shows it as soon as you type the ISBN-10.

Type 0306406152 and the lookup shows 978-0-306-40615-7. The check digit changes because the two forms use different calculations; the guide below shows each step.

What is an ISBN? the parts of an ISBN and how the conversion and the check digit work.

ISBN-13 to ISBN-10

Only an ISBN-13 that starts with 978 has an ISBN-10 form; for those, the lookup shows it next to the ISBN-13. An ISBN that starts with 979 has no ISBN-10, so use the 13 digits.

Finding a Book by Its ISBN

The lookup checks the number on your device and, when you click, asks Open Library for a book with that ISBN, then shows the title and a link to the record.

Book ISBN Lookup in Open Library

Open Library is an open, free catalog of books. The search sends only the ISBN, straight from your browser to openlibrary.org; Barcode.codes does not see it or keep it.

When No Book Is Found

A valid check digit shows that the number is well formed, not that a book was published with it. Open Library does not list every book, so try the publisher, a bookseller or a national library catalog for a recent or local title.

Checking an ISBN

The check digit catches most typing mistakes: the lookup recalculates it from the other digits and names the right one when the last digit does not match.

An ISBN-13 uses the GS1 check digit of an EAN-13, and an ISBN-10 uses a different calculation that can give X. The check digit calculator shows each step for both.

What the Registration Group Shows

The digits after 978 or 979 name the registration group: a language area or a country whose ISBN agency issued the number. It does not show where the book was printed, and it does not name the publisher.

ISBN Barcode Examples

On a book, the ISBN is printed as an EAN-13 barcode, often with a five-digit add-on for the price; these are the files the generator makes for the example ISBN.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the ISBN Lookup Free?

Yes. The check, the conversion and the barcode download are free and run in your browser, and the Open Library search is free as well.

Can an ISBN Lookup Find Any Book?

No. The lookup finds books that Open Library has a record for. A book that is not there may still exist; its publisher or a national library is the next place to look.

Why Does My ISBN Show a Different Check Digit?

Usually a digit was typed wrong, or the last digit of an ISBN-10 was compared with an ISBN-13. The two forms use different check digits, so 0306406152 and 9780306406157 are the same ISBN.

Does an ISBN Starting With 979 Have an ISBN-10?

No. ISBN-10 numbers were only ever 978 ISBNs, so a 979 ISBN is used with all 13 digits.

Is an ISBN the Same as the Barcode Number?

For an ISBN-13, yes: the EAN-13 barcode on the cover holds the same 13 digits. A price add-on to the right of the barcode is separate and is not part of the ISBN.

Does Barcode.codes Sell or Assign ISBNs?

No. ISBNs come from the ISBN agency of the publisher's country, such as Bowker in the United States. This page only checks, converts and draws ISBNs you already have.
