Barcode Country Codes: Full GS1 Prefix List by Country

Barcode country codes are the first digits of an EAN or UPC number, called the GS1 Prefix. They show which GS1 Member Organization issued the number, not where the product was made, and books, magazines, coupons and store numbers have ranges of their own. The list below comes from GS1's own prefix list.

Does a Barcode Show the Country of Origin?

No. GS1 states that its prefixes do not identify the country of origin of a product, because a company can make its products anywhere.

Why 690 Does Not Always Mean Made in China

A prefix from 690 to 699 means the number came from GS1 China. The company that licensed it may make the product in another country, and a factory in China may print numbers licensed from GS1 US.

Where to Find the Real Origin

Look for the origin statement printed on the package or label, such as Made in or Product of. That text, not the barcode, is what tells you where the product was made.

How to Find the Country Code in a Barcode

Write the number in 13 digits and find the range its first digits fall in; most ranges have three digits, and some United States ranges are longer.

  1. Take the number under the barcode. Give a 12-digit UPC a 0 in front; expand an 8-digit UPC-E to its UPC-A first.
  2. For a 14-digit GTIN-14, leave out the first digit, the indicator, and read the 13 digits after it.
  3. Compare the first digits with the ranges in the list below: most have three digits, such as 500–509 for GS1 UK, while GS1 US also uses 0001–0009 and 00001–00009.
  4. An 8-digit EAN-8 uses GS1-8 Prefixes and is not read with this list; a scanner names the type, since UPC-E and EAN-8 both show eight digits.
EAN-13 barcode 5901234123457 with its parts marked: 590 is the GS1 Prefix of GS1 Poland, the digits up to the last are the rest of the company prefix and the item reference, and 7 is the check digit.
In the EAN-13 5901234123457, the first three digits, 590, are the GS1 Prefix of GS1 Poland, the office that issued the number. They do not show where the product was made.

Examples of Reading a Prefix

  • UPC 614141234561: read as 0614141234561: GS1 Prefix 061, issued by GS1 US.
  • EAN-13 6901234567892: GS1 Prefix 690, issued by GS1 China; the product may be made in any country.
  • EAN-13 9781234567897: 978, the ISBN prefix of a book: it names no country.

UPC Numbers and the Leading Zero

GS1 reads a 12-digit UPC with an implied leading zero, so UPC 614141234561 has the GS1 Prefix 061, not 614. GS1 US issues most prefixes from 001 to 139; 020 to 029 and 040 to 049 are Restricted Circulation Numbers, and 050 to 059 are reserved.

EAN-8 Numbers

An 8-digit EAN uses its own GS1-8 Prefixes, and GS1 assigns each EAN-8 number individually. The first digits of an EAN-8 therefore cannot be read with this list.

Every GS1 Prefix below comes from GS1's own list; filter it by a prefix, a full barcode number or a country.

GS1 Prefixes, from GS1's list saved 2026-10-04. A 12-digit UPC is read with a leading 0, so UPC 614141234561 has prefix 061.

Prefixes not explicitly listed are reserved by GS1 Global Office for future use. 960, 961 and 9620 to 9624 are assigned to GS1 UK, and 9625 and 9626 to GS1 Poland, for GTIN-8 allocation. For 12-digit GTINs there is an implied leading zero: the GS1 Prefix of 614141234561 is 061, not 614. The country or area is the territory of the issuing GS1 Member Organization, as GS1 names it; it says nothing about where a product is made.

Special Prefixes That Are Not Countries

Some prefixes belong to a kind of number rather than a country: books, serials, coupons, examples and numbers for use inside a store or company.

  • 977: ISSN, for magazines and other serials.
  • 978 and 979: ISBN, for books; part of 979 is ISMN, for printed music.
  • 02, 04 and 20 to 29: Restricted Circulation Numbers inside a company or a region.
  • 980 to 983 and 99: refund receipts and coupons.
  • 952: demonstrations and examples of the GS1 system.

Store Barcodes Starting With 2

Numbers starting with 20 to 29 are Restricted Circulation Numbers: the local GS1 organization decides how they are used in its region. The same number can mean different things in different countries, so no worldwide list can name the product.

Books, Magazines and Music

GS1 allocates 978 and 979 to the International ISBN Agency and 977 to the ISSN International Centre. For these numbers the next digits follow the ISBN or ISSN system, not a country list.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Country Is Barcode Prefix 690?

Prefixes 690 to 699, and 680 to 681, are issued by GS1 China. They show where the number was licensed, which is not always where the product was made.

What Is the Barcode Country Code for the USA?

GS1 US issues numbers from the prefixes 001 to 019, 030 to 039 and 060 to 139, plus the longer prefixes 0001 to 0009 and 00001 to 00009. A 12-digit UPC gets a 0 in front before you read it.

Why Is the Country Code Different From Where It Was Made?

The prefix follows the GS1 office that licensed the number to the brand owner. A brand licensed in one country can have its products made in another.

What Does a Barcode Starting With 2 Mean?

Prefixes 20 to 29 are Restricted Circulation Numbers, defined by the local GS1 organization for use in its region. They are not unique worldwide, so they cannot be looked up in a global list.

Do Books Have a Country Code?

Not in the barcode prefix: books use 978 or 979 everywhere. The ISBN's registration group, the digits after the prefix, names a language area or country agency instead.

How Current Is This List?

It was copied from GS1's own GS1 Company Prefix page on the date shown under the table. GS1 adds prefixes over time, so a number outside every listed range may have a newer prefix.
