Data Matrix vs QR Code: Differences and Which to Use

Data Matrix vs QR code: both are square 2D barcodes, but a Data Matrix can be much smaller and rectangular, while a QR code holds more data, lets you choose its error correction and opens in phone cameras. This guide compares their size, capacity, error correction and reading, and says when to use each.

Data Matrix vs QR Code: The Main Differences

Both are square 2D barcodes; Data Matrix starts smaller and can be rectangular, while QR Code holds more data and lets you choose its error correction.

Which One Is Smaller?

For the same short data, a Data Matrix needs fewer modules and a narrower quiet zone, so it prints smaller than a QR code.

The same web address, https://barcode.codes/, at the same module size: a Data Matrix of 20 × 20 modules and a QR Code of 25 × 25 modules.

A Worked Example

With its quiet zone, the Data Matrix above takes 20 + 2 = 22 modules per side and the QR code 25 + 8 = 33. At 0.5 mm per module that is 11 mm against 16.5 mm, which matters on a part, a vial or a small label.

Error Correction and Damage

Both use Reed-Solomon error correction, but QR Code lets you trade capacity for robustness while Data Matrix fixes the amount by size.

QR Code Levels

A QR code can restore about 7% of its codewords at level L, 15% at M, 25% at Q and 30% at H. A higher level makes the code larger for the same data but lets it survive more damage, or a logo over its center.

Data Matrix ECC 200

Every Data Matrix size has a fixed share of error correction codewords set by the standard. You choose the size, or let the encoder pick the smallest that fits, and the protection comes with it.

Which One Should You Use?

Choose a QR code when people will scan it with a phone, and a Data Matrix when space is tight or a scanner in a process reads it.

Choose a QR Code When

The code is for people: a link on a poster, a menu, a package or a business card. People scan it with a phone, and the iPhone Camera app opens QR codes without another app.

Choose a Data Matrix When

The code is for machines: small parts or labels where every millimeter counts, read by a scanner in a process. A rectangular Data Matrix also fits a narrow strip that a square code would not.

Data Matrix generator makes square and rectangular Data Matrix codes.

GS1 Data in 2D

For product data in the GS1 system, use GS1 DataMatrix or a QR code with a GS1 Digital Link web address; GS1 lists both for retail 2D barcodes. A plain QR code with an ordinary link does not carry the GTIN in GS1's syntax.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Data Matrix a QR Code?

No. Both are 2D matrix barcodes, but they are different symbologies with their own standards: ISO/IEC 16022 for Data Matrix and ISO/IEC 18004 for QR Code. A scanner must support each one to read it.

Which Holds More Data, Data Matrix or QR Code?

QR Code. At its largest size and lowest error correction it holds 7,089 digits, against 3,116 for the largest Data Matrix.

Can a Phone Read a Data Matrix Code?

Yes, with a scanner app or a web scanner such as the one on Barcode.codes, which reads Data Matrix with the camera. Apple's iPhone guide names QR codes for the Camera app, so a Data Matrix may need a separate app on an iPhone.

Does a Data Matrix Need a Quiet Zone?

Yes, one module wide on all four sides. A QR code needs four modules, which is one reason a Data Matrix prints smaller.
