In the preview, a checkered pattern shows the transparent areas. Print a transparent barcode only on a white or very light surface: scanners need the light quiet zone around it.

Margin and borderNew0 mm · no border

The margin is blank space outside the quiet zone, for cutting; the border is drawn at the outer edge. Both count in the print size.

How to Create an ITF-14 Barcode

Enter the carton's GTIN, choose the bearer bars for your printing method, and download.

      1. Type the 13 digits of the GTIN-14 without its check digit, or all 14 to have it checked.
      2. Choose the bearer bars: a 2 × X frame for digital and thermal printers, or 4.83 mm for plate printing.
      3. Keep the GS1 size for distribution: an X-dimension from 0.495 to 1.016 mm and bars at least 31.75 mm tall.
      4. Download SVG for packaging artwork, or PNG for a label printer, and scan a test print.

      What an ITF-14 Barcode Carries

An ITF-14 barcode carries a GTIN in 14-digit form and marks cases, cartons and pallets that hold products.

      The GTIN in 14 Digits

      • GTIN-14: a number for the carton itself, with an indicator digit in front.
      • GTIN-13 or GTIN-12: the item's own number, padded with leading zeros to 14 digits.
      • Check digit: the last digit, calculated with the GS1 mod 10 rule.
ITF-14 barcode 15901234123454 with its parts marked: the indicator digit 1, the GTIN-13 590123412345 without its check digit, the new check digit 4, and the bearer bars around the symbol.
ITF-14 15901234123454: the indicator digit 1, the GTIN-13 590123412345 without its check digit, and the new check digit 4.

      The Indicator Digit

      • 1 to 8: can mark the packaging level, such as an inner pack and an outer case of the same item.

ITF-14 barcode 25901234123451: indicator digit 2 in front of the item number 590123412345 and a new check digit.
      • 9: is reserved for variable measure items, such as cases sold by weight.

ITF-14 barcode 95901234123450: indicator digit 9, which marks a variable measure item.

      Bearer Bars

Bearer bars are the thick lines around or above and below an ITF-14; GS1 requires them unless they cannot be printed.

      Why They Matter

They even out the pressure of a printing plate across the symbol and stop a scanner beam that enters at a slant from reading only part of the code. Without them, short partial reads become more likely.

      Frame or Thinner Bars

With printing plates the bearer bar is a frame 4.83 mm thick around the symbol and its quiet zones. Other printing needs bars at least twice the X-dimension at the top and bottom; the generator draws a full frame in either thickness, which GS1 also allows.

      Printing ITF-14 on Cartons

Print ITF-14 large enough for scanners in warehouses, on a light background, with its quiet zones clear.

      Size for Distribution

GS1 sets an X-dimension of 0.495 to 1.016 mm and a bar height of at least 31.75 mm for cartons scanned in general distribution. The generator starts at the 0.495 mm target and warns when a setting falls outside the range.

      Printing on Corrugated Board

GS1 advises against an X-dimension below 0.635 mm when ITF-14 is printed directly on corrugated board with plates. Choose a larger X-dimension, or print a label and stick it on the carton.

      Bar Width Ratio

GS1 allows wide elements 2.25 to 3 times the narrow ones, with 2.5 as the target. This generator draws 3:1, inside the range, because it can be reproduced exactly at every printer resolution.

      Frequently Asked Questions

What Is an ITF-14 Barcode Used For?

It marks cases, cartons and pallets that contain products, so warehouses and distribution centers can scan them. The single items inside carry their own UPC or EAN barcodes.

      Do I Need Bearer Bars?

GS1 requires them unless they cannot be printed, because they help prevent partial reads. The generator draws them by default.

Can I Use My Product's UPC in an ITF-14?

Yes. A GTIN-12 or GTIN-13 padded with leading zeros to 14 digits can be encoded; for a carton that is a different trade unit from the item, a GTIN-14 with an indicator digit is used instead.

What Size Should an ITF-14 Be?

For general distribution GS1 sets an X-dimension of 0.495 to 1.016 mm and a minimum bar height of 31.75 mm. The print size under the settings shows the result in millimeters and inches.

Is ITF-14 the Same as SCC-14?

SCC-14 is an older name still used in labeling software for the 14-digit carton number. That number is a GTIN-14, and ITF-14 is the barcode that carries it.

      Is This ITF-14 Generator Free?

Yes, with no account, watermark or download limit, including for commercial packaging.
