GS1 Barcodes: Types, Keys and Data Explained
A GS1 barcode carries a GS1 identification key, such as a GTIN for a product or an SSCC for a pallet, in a barcode type of the GS1 system. This guide explains the GS1 barcode types, how Application Identifiers and GS1 Digital Link add data such as a batch or an expiry date, and where the numbers come from.

What Is a GS1 Barcode?
A GS1 barcode encodes a GS1 identification key, sometimes with more data, in one of the barcode types of the GS1 system.
Identification Keys
- GTIN: the Global Trade Item Number of a trade item, such as a product sold in a store.
- SSCC: the Serial Shipping Container Code of a logistic unit, such as a pallet.
- GLN: the Global Location Number of a physical location.
Who Issues the Numbers
GS1 Member Organizations license GS1 Company Prefixes, from which companies build their GTINs, SSCCs and other keys; some also sell individual GTINs, which are single product numbers and give no prefix for SSCCs. A barcode generator, this one included, draws a barcode for a number but does not issue it.
GS1 Barcode Types
The GS1 system uses EAN/UPC at retail checkout, ITF-14 and GS1-128 in general distribution, and 2D barcodes such as GS1 DataMatrix, GS1 QR Code, and QR Code or Data Matrix with a GS1 Digital Link URI for more data.
| Type | Carries | On Barcode.codes |
|---|---|---|
| EAN-13, UPC-A, UPC-E, EAN-8 | A GTIN | UPC and EAN-13 generators |
| ITF-14 | A GTIN-14, or a shorter GTIN in 14 digits, on cartons | ITF-14 generator |
| GS1-128 | Element strings, such as an SSCC or a GTIN with a batch | GS1-128 and SSCC generators |
| GS1 DataMatrix | Element strings | GS1 DataMatrix generator |
| GS1 QR Code | Element strings, in the FNC1 mode of QR Code | Read by the scanner, not generated |
| QR Code or Data Matrix with GS1 Digital Link | A GS1 Digital Link URI | GS1 Digital Link generator |
| GS1 DataBar | A GTIN; Expanded also carries other AIs | Read by the scanner, not generated |
Retail Checkout
Products scanned at a store checkout carry EAN-13 or UPC-A, or EAN-8 and UPC-E on small packages. These hold only the GTIN.
UPC barcode generator UPC-A and UPC-E.
EAN-13 barcode generator EAN-13 and EAN-8.
Distribution and Logistics
Cartons carry ITF-14 or GS1-128, and pallet labels carry the SSCC in GS1-128. GS1-128 adds data such as batch numbers, dates and counts with Application Identifiers.
ITF-14 barcode generator the carton barcode with bearer bars.
GS1-128 barcode generator element strings checked with GS1's engine.
SSCC barcode generator the pallet label number in a GS1-128.
2D Barcodes
GS1 DataMatrix carries element strings, and a QR Code or Data Matrix can carry the same data as a GS1 Digital Link URI. GS1 QR Code, the element string form of QR Code, is read by the scanner on this site but not generated.
GS1 DataMatrix generator GS1 data in a small 2D code.
GS1 Digital Link generator your GTIN in a web address, as a QR Code or Data Matrix.
How GS1 Barcodes Carry Data
A GS1 barcode carries extra data in one of two forms: element strings, an Application Identifier followed by its value, or a GS1 Digital Link URI, the same keys and data written as a web address.
GS1 Application Identifiers list every AI with its format and FNC1 rule.
Application Identifiers
The GS1 Barcode Syntax Dictionary of January 27, 2026 lists 541 AIs, from (00) for the SSCC to (99) for company internal information. Each has a defined format, and some are only valid together with others, such as a batch number with a GTIN.
FNC1 and Separators
GS1-128, GS1 DataMatrix and GS1 QR Code start their data with the FNC1 character, which tells the scanner that element strings follow; the scanner does not pass this first FNC1 on. Inside the data, a value without a predefined length is followed by a separator when another AI comes next.
GS1 Digital Link
A GS1 Digital Link URI writes the keys and AIs as a web address, such as https://id.gs1.org/01/09506000134352/10/LOT42, so a QR Code can also open a web page. It is encoded as plain text without FNC1, and software recognizes it by checking the URI against GS1's syntax (GS1 System Architecture, section 5.2.3).
GS1 Barcode Example
The element strings (01)09506000134352(17)271231(10)LOT42 hold a GTIN, an expiry date and a batch number.
| Part | Meaning | Value |
|---|---|---|
| (01) | GTIN, in 14 digits | 09506000134352 |
| (17) | Expiration date (YYMMDD) | 271231 |
| (10) | Batch or lot number | LOT42 |
Try it: GS1 element strings
8, 12, 13 or 14 digits, with the check digit.
YYMMDD, such as 271231.
Up to 20 characters.
- Element strings
- (01)09506000134352(17)271231(10)LOT42
- (01) GTIN
- 09506000134352
- (17) Expiry date
- 2027-12-31
- (10) Batch or lot
- LOT42
The Encoded Message
Encoded, the message is FNC1 followed by 01095060001343521727123110LOT42. The brackets are not encoded, and because (01) and (17) have predefined lengths, no separator is needed before (10).
How to Get a GS1 Barcode
Get your numbers from your GS1 Member Organization, assign them, then make and test the barcodes.
Steps to Your First GS1 Barcode
- Contact your GS1 Member Organization, such as GS1 US in the United States.
- License a GS1 Company Prefix, or buy individual GTINs where your organization sells them and you only need product numbers.
- Assign a GTIN to each product, and an SSCC to each logistic unit you ship; SSCCs need a GS1 Company Prefix.
- Make the barcodes here and scan a test print before printing labels.
Checking a GS1 Barcode
Barcode.codes checks the data in a GS1 barcode with GS1's Barcode Syntax Engine; grading print quality needs a barcode verifier.
Check the Data
Paste element strings, raw data, scanner output or a GS1 Digital Link URI into Check GS1 data, under the Application Identifiers of the GS1-128 or GS1 DataMatrix generator. It names the AI and the rule when something is wrong.
Check the Print
A barcode verifier grades a printed symbol, and GS1 sets the minimum grade for each application. This site cannot grade print quality; it can only confirm that a print scans and holds the right data.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a UPC a GS1 Barcode?
Yes. UPC-A is one of the GS1 barcode types and carries a 12-digit GTIN. The term GS1 barcode also covers GS1-128, GS1 DataMatrix and the other types of the GS1 system.
Can I Make a GS1 Barcode for Free?
Yes. Barcode.codes makes the GS1 barcode types marked in the table above for free. The number in the barcode still has to come from GS1.
What Size Should a GS1 Barcode Be?
It depends on the barcode type and where it is scanned. The symbol specification tables in section 5.12 of the GS1 General Specifications set the X-dimension, height and quiet zones for each application, and each generator here starts at GS1's target size for its type.
Where Can I Check Who Owns a GS1 Barcode Number?
The barcode lookup on this site shows the type, check digit and GS1 prefix of a UPC, EAN or ISBN. GS1's Verified by GS1 service shows which company a GTIN is licensed to.
Which Standards Define GS1 Barcodes?
The GS1 General Specifications define the barcode types, sizes, data rules and AIs; this site cites Release 26.0. The GS1 Barcode Syntax Dictionary records the AI rules in a form software can read.
Do Retailers Require GS1 Barcodes?
Retailers set their own rules, and many ask for a GTIN licensed from GS1 on each product. Check each retailer's requirements before printing packaging.
